Possum Wool Socks

Keeping warm in winter can be the difference between having a lousy day and a great day. I do not know about how you feel but if my feet are chilled I get very annoyed and generally make to the local coffee shop to get my feet warm.

That is why possum socks are so worth their weight in gold and here is why.

Reason Number One.
Possum wool contains a percentage of possum fur and possum fur is unique as it is hollow. Being that the fur is tubular it traps body warmth and reflects it back onto the skin making possum socks the warmest socks on the planet.

Reason Number Two.
Possum wool socks do not smell! Possum fur contains a natural anti-bacterial component that prevents odor from building in the sock. This is why Possum wool is so popular with travellers as they only need wash the socks every week or so.

Reason Number Three.
Possum wool is very light and warm. In fact possum wool is half the weight of sheep wool and being that it is a natural fiber it does not produce odor like it’s unnatural competitor, synthetic polar fleece. Being so light and easy to look after means possum wool is very popular with discerning travellers.

Possum wool socks were first invented in the 1960′s when New Zealand had (and still has) a major over population problem of the imported marsupial the Possum. The Possum was introduced to New Zealand from Australia in the 1800′s as a source of income for the settlers with the valuable fur. What was not known at the time was how quickly the Possum adapted to New Zealand conditions and started breeding in huge numbers and destroying native trees and wildlife.

Shortly the problem became so bad that Government legislation was introduced in the 1930′s to cull the animals to try to preserve native wildlife.

In the 1960′s Peter the Possum Man invented possum wool and started making possum socks, possum jerseys, possum hats, gloves, beanies, jackets and many other possum fur related products. Possum fur products are promoted heavily to help the industry keep on top of the booming Possum population estimated at 69 million at last count.
This is in a country of 4 million people and a very small country. Considering Possums eat new shoots and leaves on trees the damage to native trees and birds is drastic and many native forests have been destroyed by the greedy possum.

I personally have a wonderful pair of possum clogs which are so warm and comfortable that I live in them over winter. They do not smell even with my stinky feet. So take a look at our website in the links shown above and purchase a unique pair of possum socks or other items and keep warm this winter.
