Researchers Can Invert Getting Older In Mice
Individuals have long been looking for the fountain of youth, or the way to invert aging. It sounds impossible, however some scientists recently might have found part of the answer. Staying young forever is still impossible for humans, as the breakthrough has only worked for mice.
Discovering the way to reverse mice age
It was found at the Harvard Medical School that gene therapy, reports ABC, can be used to invert the age of laboratory mice. The Dana-Farber Cancer Institute was responsible for this. Also, the research team was headed by Harvard Medical School’s Dr. Ronald A. DePinho. The findings were published within the journal Nature. After researchers were able to genetically engineer mice that aged faster, gene therapy was used to invert the effects of aging, and it was successful. Darker fur would grow by mice that had their hair turn gray. In Alzheimer's, the brain shrinks just as it did in some of these rats. Their brain tissue would grow back though. Subjects that had lost some organ function were able to have it restored. Infertility was reversed. The implication is that there might be a way to stop getting older, or at least stop or diminish the effects of getting older.
How it could operate
How the procedure works is by gene therapy. DNA has pairs of chromosomes, which have caps to them called telomeres. Telomeres produce a protective compound called telomerase, which is what the study focused on. As organisms age, less telomerase is produced, and the telomeres break down over time, which causes damage to DNA structure. The mice in the lab had the telomere breakdown reversed. Gene therapy was used to do this. The procedure being slowed was the purpose of the study rather than reversing getting older totally.
That sounds nice, but what is the issue?
Gene therapy isn’t even close to being something that humans can use. It is likely that any human benefit can be from drug regimens that stimulate telomere growth. The process of aging, or the breakdown of the body due to aging, can be affected if humans can use it. There won’t be any method to have eternal life. Telomerase therapies won’t be for that.
