The Origin Of Moon Boots

If you are of a certain age and somebody mentions moon boots, you will probably imagine big yeti-style ungainly appearance footwear. The explanation for this is that in the early 1970s the Italian producer Tecnica Group, which is still situated in Giavero del Montello, first created these boots which in turn became a distinctive fashionable trend during the eighties.

These boots were manufactured with a thin rubber outsole and a cellular rubber midsole, which is the identical sole construction of the boots which Neil Armstrong and Edwin (Buzz) Aldrin wore when they first set foot and walked on the moon in July 1969 in NASAs Apollo 11 mission, as did all of those other astronauts in later visits to the moon, hence the name 'Moon Boots'.

They were primarily sized in just small, medium, large etc and there was no distinction between the left or right feet. They were better suited for trudging through snow than walking or running anywhere else. To this date Tecnica supplies the Moon Boot having distributed approximately 25 million pairs to date.

There are numerous styles and colours to choose from these days although in the past they were generally blue and they are still extremely popular with the skiing fraternity. Anything that has got the astronaut style of sole on it is typically classed as a moon boot. With the name actual itself having been copyrighted, the genuine Tecnica boots are the only ones which may be actually marketed as a 'Moon Boots'. Even though colloquially the term 'moon boot' has now become a universal term for any soft shell boot which often are fur lined and also nowadays referred to as 'snow boots'.

It isn't just 'Uggs' or 'Mukluks' (often known as 'Eskimo Boots') that come into this classification, most winter boots with fake fur lining with a soft shell, whether they are ankle, mid calf or knee high, are also known these days as 'moon boots'. These come in a variety of colours, mostly chestnut, black, brown and sand. And they are extremely popular everywhere.
