What Are My Clothes Saying About Me?
Some people believe that clothes are not important, and that you should not put a lot of thought into your appearance. They argue that fashion is shallow and materialistic, and that you should not spend time or money on the way that you dress. It's true that you don't have to spend a ton of money buying brand name clothes, but in reality, they way you dress does send a message to the people you meet throughout your day. Whether or not it should, appearance has a lot to do with people's first impressions of one another.
Think about the way that you respond to other people's outfits. If you see a man with long hair and beard wearing a black helmet, a leather jacket, and boots, you assume that he is a biker. You imagine that he rides a motorcycle and identifies with that culture. Likewise, if you see a girl with a purple mohawk, a nose ring, and combat boots, you probably think that she considers herself part of the punk culture. These people are sending a message with the way that they are dressed.
Sometimes, people assume that someone listens to a certain type of music based on the way they are dressed. If you see a guy with a baggy white t-shirt, baggy jeans, and the latest Jordans, you might assume that he likes rap music. And if you see a woman with her jeans tucked into brown boots, a fringed denim jacket, and cowboy hat, you will probably think that she's a fan of country music.
Sometimes, a message is sent through the things we refuse to wear. Since vegans shun anything contrived from animal products, they would not wear any type of leather or fur. A vegan would not wear a leather watch or a sweater made from rabbit hair.
Whether we like it or not, our clothes send signals to the people who see them. If you dress in a manner that is drab and that hides the shape of your body, people will assume that you are doing so for a reason. They will assume that you are ashamed, and that you want to blend into the background and avoid attention. The next time you get dressed, find a mirror, and ask yourself a couple of questions.
What does this outfit say about me?
Is this the message that I really want to convey?
If you determine that the answer is no, you might want to find an alternative. Clearly your clothes should not send messages that aren't true. You shouldn't dress in a way that you are uncomfortable with in order to conform to the latest style. But your clothes should, in some way, reflect the unique aspects of your personality. If the way you dress is drab and boring, chances are they are not doing that. Think of your outfits as an art form. Have fun with them, and do your best to show who you are!
